This position is based at the hospital in Victoria, which is the hub of a unique, fully-integrated health-authority wide seniors mental health program. Geriatric psychiatry and geriatric medicine are combined in one program to ensure seamless access for seniors. The program also integrates inpatient, outpatient, outreach, consultation/ liaison, nursing home consultation, and tertiary programs. This provides an enjoyable and stimulating diversity of clinical work. This model makes call and holiday coverage more efficient, and ensures that each of us can manage our work week with fewer crisis interruptions since we each take a turn covering emergencies one day per week. The Division is strongly committed to undergraduate and postgraduate education. There are 4-5 Island Medical Program medical students rotating through psychiatry at any given time. Each of them will spend an afternoon with one of the geriatric psychiatrists. Victoria also has a complete psychiatry residency program, and 1-2 PGY3 residents are anchored on geriatric psychiatry. Clinical faculty appointments are available for all geriatric psychiatrists through a joint application to the University of Victoria Island Medical Program and University of BC Faculty of Medicine. There are expanding research opportunities through the VIHA Academic and Research Program. Currently clinical trials in Alzheimer treatment are underway. We are a member of the C5R Consortium for dementia research. On call is for geriatric psychiatry only and tends to be very quiet. Weekend call is shared among all 8 members of the Division. During weekdays, the geriatric psychiatrists based at Royal Jubilee cover each other's practices. Our inpatient program is based in the Patient Care Centre at the hospital. This is a brand new, state-of-the-art, elder-friendly acute care unit. We have one wing which is divided into a 9 bed secure unit for severe dementia with behavioral problems, and an 18 bed general geriatric psychiatry unit. Most of the rooms are private. There are ample consultation offices and teaching spaces, as well as video conferencing links and all the latest technological advances. The Division enjoys very collegial relations among ourselves and with our counterparts in adult psychiatry. Vancouver Island Health Authority promotes a co-management model for medical leadership. There are excellent relations between the medical and health authority leadership teams. This has helped us move forward with a number of exciting initiatives such as program criteria that are based on patient function and cognition rather than arbitrary age cut off, aligning our outreach teams geographically with home and community care programs to ensure stronger linkages in the community, collaborative care programs with primary care, and others. The Collaborative Care Psychiatrist is a clinical position at the University of Victoria (UVic) Outpatient Mental Health Services. The successful candidate will be expected to provide comprehensive psychiatric services integrated within a university primary health care services unit; collaboration with other psychiatrists, physicians, nurses and counsellors will occur. Shared care practice is a part of the model in this role. UVic Outpatient Mental Health Services is a new collaborative care program developed through a partnership of VIHA and UVic Health Services. It serves a population of 20,000 students and their families. A collaborative team approach involving primary health care and counselling services is utilized. Coordinated programs for Eating Disorders, Mood and Anxiety, Psychosis Intervention, and Functional Medicine are underway. The PSP Adult Mental Health Module is utilized. Child, Youth and Family Mental Health Services (CYFMHS) serves children and youth who are experiencing complex behavioural, emotional or psychiatric difficulties which significantly impact their ability to function at home, school and the community. This position aims to support service delivery at both sites (VGH and QA Centre). VGH operates a (20)-bed paediatric unit that provides admission for children presenting to the ER at VGH. The psychiatrist will provide timely consultation working with other child psychiatrists, paediatric physicians, nursing staff and auxilliary staff regarding children admitted with a mental health diagnosis. This will be primarily on a Monday to Friday basis, but will also involve participation in an on-call arrangement with other child psychiatrists providing mainly after-hours telephone advice to the ward and ER. There are three in-patient units at QA Ledger. Two are age specific-a Child Unit (up to age 12) and a Youth Unit (age 12-17). These programs provide services that include assessment, and individual, group and family therapy. A Special Care Unit provides two inpatient beds for children and youth who are experiencing a mental health crisis or an acute psychiatric illness that requires stabilization in a secure setting.
